11. 'Robot and Frank'

It literally is a robot and Frank - as in, an android and Frank Langella - in this enjoyably low-key tale that's more sentimental drama than sci-fi. The ever-expert Langella plays a former thief whose children worry that he needs regular assistance in his daily life, so instead of putting him in a nursing home, they get him a mechanical companion.

  23. Palace 17 & Odyssey Theater Showing 'Robot & Frank' Starting Aug. 31

Brilliant character actor Frank Langella, who, after many successful years on the Hollywood back-burner, made everyone stand up and take notice with his performance as Tricky Dick in Frost/Nixon a few years ago, gives another Oscar-worthy performance in Robot & Frank, opening this weekend in Hartford. Langella plays Frank, an elderly ex-con dealing with memory loss, loneliness and boredom. When his exasperated son delivers a home health-care robot (the movie is set in the "near future") to his door, he's reluctant to welcome it into his life. But his attitude changes when he realizes the robot doesn't live by the same moral code as us humans. Shenanigans ensue.
