1. Mariachi the heart and soul of Lyric's 'Cruzar'

The combination of opera and mariachi is not as unlikely as one might think. Both art forms, in the view of Lyric Opera General Director Anthony Freud, tell human stories about love and loss, family and country. Beyond that, said Freud, "mariachi is a unique, joyful, sorrowful cocktail that has the emotional immediacy of Puccini and a sound world as distinct as that of any great composer."

  3. Tony Awards: Steppenwolf, Tracy Letts lead Chicago nominations

Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company had a very good New York morning Tuesday with three of its ensemble members scoring 2013 Tony nominations: Tracy Letts and Amy Morton for their work in Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," also a Tony nominee for Best Revival of a Play, and Laurie Metcalf, honored for her intense leading performance in Sharr White's "The Other Place."

  5. A very full load of nominees for this year's Equity Jeff Awards

Apparently confronted by a plethora of riches in the past season of Chicago theater, the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee offered up not the traditional four or five nominees one finds at the Tony Awards, for instance, but a bevy of nominees for its annual awards. In the case of best Equity production in Chicago last year, the committee came up a whopping 18 nominees, divided between "large" and "midsized" companies. And that doesn't even include the musicals.

  7. Looking ahead to the Tony Awards: An off year for musicals, but 'Once' deserves to win

NEW YORK — What with "Ghost,""Lysistrata Jones" and other wearying disappointments, the 2012-13 Broadway season hardly will go down as a banner year for new American musicals. Indeed, should the best-musical Tony Award go, at Sunday night's ceremony, to a show other than "Once" or "Newsies" — the only remotely viable candidates for this most important of theatrical honors — the theater chatterati will be speechless and Tweetless. For a couple of seconds.

THEATER REVIEW: "Memphis" at the Cadillac Palace Theatre ★★★½ ... Scurrying toward the exit of the Cadillac Palace Theatre on Tuesday night, I was atypically besieged by the delighted. "I hope," said one woman, "that you liked this show as much as the rest of us."

  11. A grand weekend for jazz singing

This weekend could be one for the record books, with an extraordinary confluence of major vocalists converging on our stages.
