  3. What gives with the shorter theater seasons?

Traditionally, Chicago's nonprofit theaters view the first production of the autumn season, usually in late September or early October, as the tent pole of their artistic marquee. It's a chance to unveil something artistically challenging and substantial before the inevitable winter appearance of Ebenezer Scrooge and George Bailey.

  5. Commercial musical 'Signs of Life' coming to Biograph

The peak fall weeks at the Biograph Theatre, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., won't be occupied by a Victory Gardens Theater production, but a small commercial musical  set during the era of the Holocaust and concerning a ghetto and concentration camp located in what is now the Czech Republic, Theresienstadt, which the Nazis used for propaganda purposes by showcasing the cultural life therein.

Charlie, the dying, pathetic, 600-pound man stuck on the couch in the middle of Samuel D. Hunter's beautifully devastating drama "The Whale," is familiar with blubber. An online writing teacher, he's a fan of Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick." When Charlie'...

Playwright Samuel Hunter's "A Permanent Image" is by no means the first play to tell the story of adult siblings returning from out of town for a parent's funeral. The emotional tension of that ubiquitous human moment — which often involves booze,...

  11. In Pulitzer, seeing American drama's Chicago footprint

On Monday, Ayad Akhtar, author of the terrific play "Disgraced," which began life at the American Theater Company in Chicago, won the Pulitzer Prize in drama. He beat out writer Amy Herzog, who was a finalist. Others regarded as likely candidates for the honor were Annie Baker (author, most recently, of "The Flick") and Samuel D. Hunter, author of "The Whale," which blew me away Monday night at the Victory Gardens Theater. Last year, the Pulitzer went to Quiara Alegria Hudes for her play "Water by the Spoonful."

The words and rhymes of 12 high school poets competing in the individual finals of the Louder Than a Bomb slam poetry festival echoed off the marble walls of the Chicago Cultural Center Wednesday night. Jada-Amina Harvey, a member of Kenwood Academy's Epic Sound slam team, was one of the poets whose scores in the semifinal round garnered her the opportunity to perform her poem in front of a packed audience that included Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Her semi-autobiographical poem described a young African-American girl's struggles and successes.

  21. This comic's life, sans sleep, in 'Sleepwalk With Me' ★★★

One night in a La Quinta motel room, comedian and storyteller Mike Birbiglia jumped through a second-story window while acting out one of his dreams, ending up in the hospital with a leg full of broken glass. Well, it's a living. Since then he has turned his adventures in sleep disorders into fodder for his stand-up act, an Off-Broadway solo show, an excerpt on "This American Life," a live comedy album, the title story in his best-selling comic memoir and now, a trim and effective feature film, which Birbiglia co-directed with co-writer Seth Barrish. The only thing left for "Sleepwalk With Me" is to be turned into a Broadway musical, which would require a title change to "Sleepwalk with Me!"
