Hockey is a family sport to me. I've had a lot of fun at hockey games with my family at various venues from watching amateurs at a local skating rink in Bolton to the Bruins at the Boston TD Garden. I was a regular at the Civic Center when Ronnie Francis and Kevin Dineen led the Whalers back in the last century. I've only been to a couple of Hartford Whale games with friends, so I have to admit I'm not a hard core fan of minor league hockey.

Thirty-one years ago when I was looking for a new job and to move from the Midwest, one of my three criteria was that the newspaper had to be in a major league city. Hartford fit the bill as home of the Whalers, along with criterion number two being that I had to agree with the editorials in The Hartford Courant and criterion three, the newspaper was, and still is, dominant in its market.

I feel bad for Howard Baldwin. He's a believer and he did what he could do to bring major league hockey back to Hartford.
