  1. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up — for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.

  3. Lobsters are on a roll

Lobster is a rich man's food, true, which may be why it tastes so extraordinarily good piled into a humble hot dog roll. This New England specialty appears on 2 percent of menus nationwide where sandwiches are offered, according to a recent report by Nation's Restaurant News, but sales of lobster rolls "have grown steadily and appear on 52 percent more menus than just four years ago."

  7. Turn to the dark side

If your relationship with chicken began with nuggets and stalled amid the supermarket's plastic-sealed trays of skinless/boneless breasts, we've got a bone to pick with you.

  9. Herbed biscuits

Decades ago, our family spent vacations camping in Arkansas. We'd eat out twice: Once for fried catfish and hush puppies and the other time for a pancake breakfast. Reading the menus in the Mountain Home cafe, my Chicago-born siblings and I would marvel at the odd-sounding options, especially biscuits and gravy. We knew biscuits: Our mom served them for dessert with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. But breakfast? With sausage gravy? Not so much.

  15. Think smaller

Turkey. Let's talk about it — honestly. Is it time to ax that big ol' bird from your Thanksgiving feast? Even if you do have the free hours to roast it, a hungry crowd to feed and enough oven space to hold the monster, who these days has the carving skills to do the portioning at the dining room table? Indeed, who among us has a dining room anymore?
