  1. Water habits that are healthy

With all the talk about protein, carbohydrate and fat, it's easy to forget about a very important nutrient — water. Water makes up 55 to 75 percent of a person's body weight and plays a role in everything your body does every day.   Your body loses...

  3. Washington County - the land that recycling forgot

    timr@herald-mail.com
You know, I've been thinking — we've come this far, let's go for the whole enchilada. Let's make it our goal to be the last county in the entire United States of America to implement curbside recycling. Think back. We held out pretty well on...

  5. Start dental visits early to keep kids smiling

Ask a group of adults to list their least-favorite tasks and it's likely a few will say going to the dentist.

Ask a group of adults to list their least-favorite tasks and it's likely a few will say going to the dentist.  Luckily, many dental practices work hard to make their offices inviting and fun for young patients so they might not have that same feeling...

  7. Washington County needs to move on recycling

The recycling debate in Washington County and its towns calls to mind the decades-old effort to put fluoride in the drinking water. It’s probably a good idea, but there are still elements out there who believe it is a plot involving Soviet mind...

  9. Fluoridated water? Not all Portlanders will drink to that

PORTLAND, Ore. — Proponents of fluoridating Portland's water supply had no trouble getting the local Urban League on board. Here in the biggest city in the country that still doesn't treat its water to prevent tooth decay, studies show that low-income children and kids of color have been hit hardest by untreated cavities.

  11. News of the Weird: Chocolate Toothpaste and 'Holy Crap' Cereal!

The Precocious Tots of Finland: A University of Kansas professor and two co-authors, in research in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Finance, found that children age 10 and under substantially outperformed their parents in earnings from stock trading in the few days before and after rumors swirled on possible corporate mergers. A likely explanation, they said, is that the parents or guardians were buying and selling for their children's accounts using illegal insider information that they were cautious about using in their personal accounts, which would more easily arouse suspicion. While the parents' accounts had nice returns, the kids' accounts (including those held by the very recently born) were almost 50 percent more profitable. (The study, reported by NPR in April, covered 15 years of trades in Finland, chosen because that country collects age data that the U.S. and other countries do not.)
