FEB. 21, 1928-FEB. 5, 2011
WALKERSVILLE, Md. — Doris Gossard Cottingham, age 82, passed from this world the morning of Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Kate Gossard, and her longtime companion Don Myers.
She is survived by her sister Janice Gray and her husband Bob, and sister Jody Gore; by her children and their spouses, John and Donna Cottingham, Dee Cottingham and Jerry Berlin, Jim and Teresa Cottingham, and Janice and Larry Murray; and grandchildren Taylor and Amanda Cottingham, Sarah and Collin Cottingham, Cori and Cody Berlin, Jim and Mike Abel, Patrick, Brian and Shea Murray, and great-grandson Finnegan.
Born in Hagerstown and a graduate of the original Hagerstown High School, Doris lived most of her life within 50 miles of her birthplace, despite a 10-year period shortly after World War II that took her from Boston to Louisville. Doris brought love and laughter to the lives of her children and was an extra-special grandmother. She maintained many lifelong friendships, was fiercely independent, and logged many miles on a custom slalom ski behind a classic Chris-Craft on the Potomac River. Despite her own humble financial position, she extended herself throughout her life to the benefit of strangers and others less fortunate than herself. She was a fun, adventurous and loving person who will be greatly missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at noon this Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. Peter's Church, 9190 Church St., Libertytown, Md., with a gathering to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County (which greatly assisted her and the family in her final weeks), 516 Trail Ave., Frederick MD 21702, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, in honor of Doris Cottingham, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105, www.stjude.org.
