Mayhue to speak in Sharpsburg on Sept. 1

Justin Mayhue will give a first-hand account of “John W. Brendel: 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment” Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Sharpsburg Town Hall.   

Civil War veteran Brendel wrote letters home to his wife and children, particularly his eldest daughter, 8-year-old Jenny.

Brendel wrote about what he and his regiment were experiencing from South Mountain to Appomattox. He wrote about what he was eating, how holidays were celebrated, his dislike of Lincoln, his concern for his family and other issues.

Sharpsburg Elementary plans family activities   

Sharpsburg Elementary School will begin the school year with a general PTA meeting Thursday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m.  

Students and staff are asked to wear red, white and blue on Monday, Sept. 12, in observance of Patriots Day. Sept. 12 is also grand-friends day with activities from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.  

A family picnic will be held at the school from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, followed by blue and white day Spirit Day on Friday, Sept. 16.   

The first month of the school year will conclude with a community yard sale at the school Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.



BHS Class of 1977 to hold reunion meeting  

The Boonsboro High Class of 1977 will hold a reunion meeting Sunday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. at Sherry Reeder Bingaman’s House in Boonsboro (call 301-432-5034 or 240-217-0514 for directions).  

The class will have a fundraiser table at Boonesborough Days on the corner of Lakin Avenue and Main Street, selling miniature schoolhouses, Indian head figures and bottled water.



Boonsboro Band to hold tag day  

The Boonsboro Warrior Band will participate in tag day Saturday.

Uniformed band members will go door to door from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in neighborhoods in the Boonsboro school district to ask for donations (donations are tax-deductible).  Donations will offset the cost of uniform maintenance, instruments, repairs and transportation for the band to events, including the Mummers Parade, Memorial Day parades, ensemble festivals and competitions around the region.

Join Anita for Zumba at St. Mark’s  

Licensed Zumba instructor Anita Binder will teach fall/winter Zumba sessions at St. Mark’s Parish Hall, 18313 Lappans Road in Boonsboro, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6 and running through Wednesday, Dec. 21.

 Two classes run Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.  Classes costs $2 per class when purchasing a 15-class punch card.  The drop-in fee costs $5 per class.  Class-punch cards are valid to be used at both St. Mark’s and Mount Nebo for Saturday classes.  The workouts are for those ages 13 and older (those ages 13 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent, and a signed waiver is required).
