Emmeline Pasquerette and Isabella Prenger were winners in the Sharpsburg Elementary School geography bee on Jan. 12.
Fourth-graders Mason Gumm, Avery Poffenberger, Clara Ritenour, Elena Scheerer and Pasquerette reached the finals. Peyton Blood, Claire Hahn, Steven Hamilla, Karen Hosova and Prenger reached the finals in the fifth grade.
Each participant received gel pens, a ribbon and participation certificate.
School champion Pasquerette received a medal from the National Geographic Society and a trophy. Prenger, the runner-up, received a trophy.
Enrichment Specialist Kristin English moderated the competition, while Principal Ryan Hench, fourth-grade teacher Amy Monninger, and Student Achievement Specialist Carol Brunner served as judges. Fifth-grade teacher Cynthia Weaver was the timekeeper.
Fire company to hold bingo
Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold a basket bingo Saturday.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and bingo begins at 1 p.m. The kitchen will be open.
Tickets cost $15 for nine pack specials. Raffles and extra papers will be available.

Pancake supper planned
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 209 Main St., Sharpsburg, will hold a pancake supper Tuesday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The community is invited.
Civil War speaker
The Rev. John Schildt, author of more than 20 books on the Civil War, will speak at the Keedysville Historical Society meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Keedysville.
Schildt will speak on “Keedysville and the Battle of Antietam.”
Church to hold hymn sing
Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren, at 123 E. Main St., Sharpsburg, will hold a hymn sing for the Camp Shepherd’s Spring scholarship fund Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be served following the hymn sing.
Lions to sell sandwiches
The Sharpsburg Lions Club will sell country ham sandwiches.
The sandwiches cost $2 apiece. The sandwiches will be available Thursday, March 15 or by delivery on Friday, March 16.

Lions announce winners of decorating contest
For its annual Christmas lighting contest, the Sharpsburg Lions Club awarded prizes to three Sharpsburg residents for best house and/or lawn decorations, and three prizes for best door decorations.
The winners for house and lawn are: first place, Bertha Malone, 17743 Davidson Drive; second place, Buddy Rowe, 17302 Shepherdstown Pike; and third place, Tamara and Lauren Wolfe, 203 S. Mechanic St.
The winners for doorways are: first place, Tim Rohr, 5422 Sharpsburg Pike; second place, Steve Williams, 227 W. Main St.; third place, Cara Burker, 232 W. Main St.
Landscaping class offered
Keedysville resident and professional horticulturist Deborah Smith-Fiola will offer a course on Low Maintenance Landscaping for Homeowners Thursdays, March 1 and 8 at the Valley Mall classroom center from 1 to 3 p.m.
The course will cover selection of trees, shrubs and flowers that are not prone to insects, diseases and cultural problems.

Mills to speak on Civil War love
The Sharpsburg Historical Society will hold a “Romantic Love” general meeting Leap Day, Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall on Main Street in Sharpsburg.
The guest presenter will be Charles Mills, author and producer from Alexandria, Va. His talk, “Love, Romance, and Marriage in the Civil War,” will examine courtship, manners, morals and marriage in the middle of the 19th century. The program is free for members and visitors.
Participants are asked to bring any 19th century valentines, love letters or marriage certificates they would like to share with the group.

Ruritan to hold dinner
Rohrersville Ruritan will hold an oyster, ham and turkey dinner Saturday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Ruritan’s Schoolhouse Building.
