Student advances in hoop shoot contest
Jackson Carrazco, a fourth-grader at Hickory Elementary School, began his journey in the Elks Hoop Shoot when he represented Hickory Elementary School Jan. 12 at Williamsport High School, where he claimed first place against other Washington County students.
Jackson then advanced to the next round of the basketball shooting contest, competing against students from Garrett, Allegany and Frederick counties, where he made 22 out of 25 free throws and won the district title.
Scholarships available
South Hagerstown High School’s Alumni Association will award five $1,000 scholarships to graduates of this year’s graduating class. Representatives from the alumni association will be in the school’s cafeteria during lunchtime Thursday to answer questions. Students are encouraged to pick up information about the scholarships and applications.
Oh say can you sing?
Auditions to sing the national anthem will be held at the Valley Mall Food Court Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those chosen will get to sing the national anthem at a Hagerstown Suns home game. Registration opens at 9 a.m.

Band Boosters to host bingo event
The Williamsport High School Blue Band Boosters will host a Longaberger Basket/Vera Bradley Bingo Sunday, March 3, at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown. Tickets cost $25 which include lunch and 26 games of bingo. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 1:30 p.m.
Drinks, raffles and tip jars will also be available for purchase.

PTA dinner night
Parents and students of Hickory Elementary are invited to a PTA fundraising dinner scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27. A portion from dinner bills at Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant will go to benefit the Hickory PTA.
