Tanner Graham, 14, of Clear Spring took first place in the Sept. 17 banjo contest sponsored by the Hancock Lions Club at Canal-Apple Days.
Tanner also took second place for his banjo skills in a bluegrass competition Oct. 16 at the Myersville, Md., Trolley Festival.
Tanner has played the banjo for almost three years. He would like to thank his aunt, Virginia Drury, for giving him his banjo, and the Hancock Lions Club and Myersville festival for giving him the opportunity to perform. He would also like to thank his banjo teacher, Ernie Bradley.
Senior girls to play benefit soccer game
Senior girls from Washington County high school soccer teams will gather for one more time to play for a cause.
“Kicking It for a Cause” will be Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at Clear Spring High School, giving the seniors one last time to play together. The game will feature players divided into East and West teams.
Proceeds from the game will benefit the Shirley B. Robinson Memorial Fund, which helps improve the quality of life for local cancer patients and their families.
Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2 for children. In addition to ticket sales, the Clear Spring Athletic Boosters Club will donate proceeds from sales at the concession stand. Fans can also contribute to the cause and there will be a raffle for the game ball. The event is sponsored by the Clear Spring Athletic Boosters and Antietam Cable.

Pancake breakfast set
Wilson Ruritan will hold a country butchering and pancake breakfast Saturday, starting at 6:30 a.m.
The menu includes of all-you-can-eat pancakes with one serving of puddin’ or sausage patty, or sausage gravy, coffee and orange juice.
The breakfast costs $4.50. Veterans eat free.

St. Paul’s Reformed Church, at 14234 National Pike, will hold an auction Saturday. Registration for bidder numbers starts at 8 a.m.
The live auction will start at 9 a.m. Auction items include housewares, tools, a time-share opportunity and other items.

Garden club plans event
The Clear Spring Garden Club gathering on Thursday, Nov. 17, will feature holiday decorating by Denny Warrenfelz of Roostervane Florist of Funkstown.
The event will be held at 7 p..m. at St. John’s UCC Social Hall. Refreshments will be served.
Tickets cost $3 for guests or $12 for a yearly membership.
Hilltop Christian Fellowship will hold a community children’s Christmas party Friday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There will be food, games and crafts. There will also be a visit from Santa Claus and a puppet show.
