Williamsport will hold its inaugural River Rat Day on Groundhog’s Day, which is Saturday.
The event begins at 10 a.m. with the “Shadow and Cheese Ceremony” on Doubleday Hill. The Hill, at the end of West Salisbury Street, overlooks the Potomac River and earned a place in history during the Civil War.
If the rat, a real rat, sees its shadow, it will mean six more weeks of winter.
Those who wear River Rat T-shirts will receive River Rat Day specials or discounts around Williamsport Town Center. The T-shirts cost $10 each and are on sale at Town Hall during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will also be sold Saturday at Town Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“Willie,” the River Rat mascot, will be browsing the streets and downtown shops, visiting with everyone.
Participating businesses include A Touch of Country, Briar Patch, Desert Rose Café, L&J Liquors, River City Barber Shop, River City Cycles, Tony’s Pizza Time Café, Williamsport Barber Shop and Odyssey Pewter Gifts.
Leo Club collects used eyeglasses
The Leo Club at Springfield Middle School is collecting used eyeglasses until March 15. The club’s goal is to collect 500 pairs.
Eyeglasses can be donated to the club by mailing them to Springfield Middle School, Attn: The Leo Club, 334 Sunset Ave., Williamsport, MD 21795; or dropping them off at the front office.

The Springfield Middle School Leo Club is an extension of the Williamsport Lions Club.
