Winter Street holds hoop shoot contest

Recently the third, fourth and fifth grade students at Winter Street Elementary participated in the school’s basketball hoop shoot contest.

The winners in the 8-to-9-year-old age group were Kathy Dominguez and Isaac Wiggington. The 10-to-11-year-old-age-group winners were Olivia Jackson and Logan Randall. These students went on to compete in the Washington County Hoop Shoot Contest at Williamsport High School, Saturday, Jan. 28.

Winter Street School holds Winter Hop

Winter Street Elementary held their annual Winter Hop Thursday to reward students for their positive behavior through the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports program.

Students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade were invited to attend the Winter Hop where DJs Slam-N-Sturtz and Hip Hop Hobbs provided music. Games were played and snacks were provided. The event was a huge success with many students attending.

Students rewarded for perfect attendance

A Winter Wonderland Breakfast was held Friday as an incentive to reward the 170 students with perfect attendance during the month of January.

Teachers, staff and volunteers made pancakes and sausage for the students to enjoy. Special thanks to Holsinger’s Meats and Hoffman’s Meats for making generous donations of breakfast sausage. Thank you also to the volunteers from Hagerstown Community College and to the following community businesses that donated student prizes: Roy Rogers, McDonald’s, Sam’s Club, Hagerstown Speedway and N.O.R.M.A.L, Inc.

Salem Avenue hoop shoot winners

During the month of December, Salem Avenue Elementary held its hoop shoot contest for grades third, fourth and fifth grades. The winners for the 8-to-9-year-old category were Jesus Silva and Jada Conaway. In the 10-to–11-year-old category, the winners were Cade Shifflet and Sierra Stallings. These students went on to compete in the Washington County Hoop Shoot contest on Jan. 28.

Anti-Bullying Week at Winter Street Elementary

This week is Anti-Bullying Week at Winter Street Elementary School. To culminate the week’s activities, the school will hold an Olweus Parent Night on at 5 p.m. Friday at Winter Street Elementary. Parents are invited to attend and learn about the countywide Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

 Salem Avenue PTA plans February events

The Salem Avenue PTA will be sponsoring a Hadley Farms fundraiser in February. Carrot cake and cinnamon buns will be sold for $4 each. The proceeds will help the PTA fund various school events.

The next PTA family movie night is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24.  All students must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone is encouraged to bring a blanket or sleeping bag to sit on. Refreshments will be sold during the movie.

Salem teachers join Kangaroo Club

Congratulations to the Salem Avenue staff members who have joined the school’s Kangaroo Jump Rope Club which consists of students and staff. To be a member you must be able to jump rope nonstop for 60 seconds without making any mistakes. The students enjoy the staff participation.
