For a couple hours Saturday morning, the streets of downtown Stanford were a little more crowded than usual with over 100 people milling around surrounded by the Stanford Police Department.
However, the Stanford Police weren’t there to quell any troubles. Instead, they were on hand to act as lead and safety patrol as those 100+ people took to the streets for the Leprechaun Leap 5K Run/Walk.
The Leprechaun Leap, which wound along Main Street, up Danville Avenue, into Oakwood Estates, back onto Danville Avenue, across Portman Avenue and down Lancaster Street before ending back on Main, was sponsored by the Lincoln County High School Boys and Girls Soccer Boosters as a fund-raiser for the two programs.
A goal of the joint Booster Club is to put lights on the high school soccer field, and Saturday’s turnout for the Leprechaun Leap resulted in donations totaling more than $3,000.
A total of 126 runners and walkers participated in the Leprechaun Leap, forking over entry fees of $25 and $20.
Travis Martin, 37, of Elizabethtown was the overall winner in the fund-raiser run/walk, finishing the race in a time of 20:24.
Both Leprechaun Leap titles would go to out-of-town runners, with Debbie Biddle of Cynthiana the first female to cross the finish line. Biddle, 51, posted a time of 24:32 which placed her 12th overall.
To add to the fun of the run/walk, a Lucky Charms Challenge table was set up mid-race for those participants willing to interrupt their running to compete in a speed-eating contest. At the conclusion of the race, Charlene Dodson showed the fastest finish of a bowl of Lucky Charms and milk. Her time of 3:05 merited her a bulk-size box of Lucky Charms. The next closest time of 3:56 was posted by Shawnna Ingram.
Prizes were awarded to the overall male and female winners and in 25 age divisions, with medals going to the first-, second- and third-place runners in each division.
