United by their shared love of the open road, good food and history, a trio of motorcycle enthusiasts is hoping to turn their 25-day trip to Honduras into an online narrative as well.
Aided by a flexible itinerary, local high school teachers Tom Tacke and Carlos Caro, accompanied by New York resident Chris Zguris, plan to stop at numerous ancient Aztec, Mayan and Olmec ruins along the way to Honduras.
“Who knows, we might end up in Panama,” Caro, a Southwest High School economics and social studies teacher, said.
The three also plan on documenting their journey for a Facebook page entitled ImpValley to Honduras, they said. Producing the online journal makes sense because it will allow them to “look back” once the trip is behind them, Zguris said.
The idea for the 3,000-mile trip came about earlier this year, and started with an open invitation to riders on a popular motorcycle Web site, Caro said. A longtime visitor of Mexico, Caro, 50, said he attempted to allay potential travelers’ concerns and make them comfortable with the idea.
Zguris was the only one to take up the local teachers’ offer.
Having been on his fair share of road trips, Zguris, said this one will be different.
“I’m looking forward to seeing totally different cultures,” the 42-year-old said.
Describing it as “a pretty epic trip,” Tacke said he is looking forward to “enjoying the road and enjoying your thoughts.”
The 52-year-old Southwest High School music teacher said a satellite tracking device will enable followers to track their progress via Facebook.
Astride touring motorcycles that can get about 40 miles to the gallon, the trekkers are planning on putting in eight hours a day on the road, punctuated by frequent stops for refueling, hydrating and the stretching of their legs.
“Our biggest concern is the weather,” Caro said.
