The candidate filing period for the special election for the 40th state Senate District opened on Jan. 9 and ends Jan. 18, the Imperial County Registrar of Voters announced.

The 40th District includes Imperial, Riverside and San Diego counties. The seat was vacated when Democrat Juan Vargas resigned to take his seat in the House of Representatives.

A special election will be held May 17 and the primary is set for March 12.

Candidates filing for the seat may do so at the county Registrar of Voters office.
