Why did the city of Brawley and/or Caltrans wait until the new Arco am/pm was open to close off the access from East Legion Road off of Highway 86? The road has been open since Walmart opened two years ago and now it is completely shut down. This closure is creating frustration for ingress and egress in this new business area. Why would the bureaucrats hinder these new businesses just as they are getting started? What gives? — Frustrated, Brawley
The portion of East Legion Road that is referenced above has been closed for some time now to perform previously scheduled construction. A northbound Highway 86 deceleration lane that merges with the eastbound East Legion Road entrance to the commercial area is being constructed, said Brawley Public Works Director Yasmin Arellano.
The construction is expected to finish by the end of January and was the result of a traffic study done during the commercial area’s planning that recommended such a lane be built. The developer is picking up the cost of having the lane developed, Arellano said.
While its closure may be an inconvenience to patrons and business owners alike, another entrance to the commercial area is available slightly north of the closed road. Arellano also noted that the Public Works Department had yet to receive any complaints from business owners or the public regarding the road’s closure.
Why is access to new businesses closed in Brawley?
