SAN DIEGO - The votes are in and three San Diego Chargers were named to the Pro Bowl all-star roster, the NFL announced Tuesday.
Quarterback Philip Rivers, free safety Eric Weddle, and tight end Antonio Gates will compete on the AFC Pro Bowl squad January 29 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
“It’s pretty amazing and exciting,” Weddle said. “The season we’ve had puts a little damper on it, but I put a lot into it and worked my tail off this offseason to make that next jump and become an elite player in this league."
A few other Chargers are were recognized as well as alternates, including receiver Vincent Jackson, running back Ryan Mathews, and center Nick Hardwick.
Gates has been invited six times, which is the most Pro Bowl selections by a Chargers tight end, surpassing Kellen Winslow.
This is River's fourth invite and will join New England Patriot Tom Brady and Pittsburgh Steeler Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback for the AFC team.
“It’s always an honor any time you’re selected,” Rivers said. “Obviously the season’s been disappointing from a team standpoint, which is most important. I think it’s always an honor and humbling any time your fellow competitors vote you in."
