A local computer designer is working overtime these days, getting ready to ship a new kind of laptop.
Customers have not seen anything like it and most are surprised to learn it was invented right here in Alaska.
It’s called the gScreen Spacebook, because it offers users a lot more room to navigate.
The Spacebook works much like any other high end notebook, but has dual monitors that slide out, doubling the amount of desktop space.
Gordon Stewart, gScreen President and CEO, invented the Spacebook in his South Anchorage garage.
He was an active video editor at the time and needed more room to work while travelling.
Some reviewers think the Spacebook is too heavy, too expensive ($2,300+), and that the one and a half hour battery life is not enough -- but for thousands of soon-to-be buyers, it's just what they’re looking for.
Stewart says stock brokers, doctors, engineers, and artists are putting down payments for the first batch, which should ship in about 90 days.
“It’s not selling by the millions, but it’s selling by the thousands, and that’s all we need to stay in business,” he said.
Almost all of gScreen’s business is online, so if things work out, Stewart says he'll stay in Alaska, improve his design, and continue to expand.
