SACRAMENTO—The man who took a 4-year-old from Patterson worked at a vegetable company before he skipped town with the boy.
Juliani Cardenas was taken from his grandmother's arms Tuesday afternoon.
The grandmother, Amparo Cardenas, recognized the man who took the child as her daughter's ex-boyfriend, 27-year-old Jose Rodriguez. She struggled with Rodriguez to hang on to little Juliani, but the man was able to take off with the boy.
Rodriguez allegedly showed up at Juliani's school earlier in the day.
A man who worked with Rodriguez at the Patterson Vegetable Company said he was taking fliers with information from the Amber Alert for Juliani to Santa Cruz Wednesday night. All this man would tell FOX40 is that he was taking the fliers to the Ben Lomand and Scotts Valley areas, but did not elaborate on why he was focusing on those neighborhoods.
The boy's mother, Tabitha Cardenas, is pregnant with Rodriguez's child and is due in March.
Investigators say Rodriguez should be considered dangerous, however he did not show any weapon during the abduction. He has a criminal history, including a manslaughter conviction from 1999.
Tabitha says he has been violent with her, but has never abused Juliani.
The Amber Alert sent out Tuesday evening reported Rodriguez was driving a 2003 Toyota Corrolla, silver in color with a spare tire on the passenger side.
There is surveillance video from a Chevron gas station in Patterson along I-5 near Sperry. It is not clear if the video was taken before or after Juliani was taken. All the windows of the car are tinted, and it's not clear if the boy is inside. Rodriguez bought a drink with a card, then got back in the car and took off.
Federal and state officials are working with Rodriguez's family in the San Jose area, but say he has family all over the state and could be headed anywhere.
