Mary Dean |
Name: Mary Dean
Office Sought: USD 259 School Board At-Large
Occupation: Retired Boeing Employee
Previous office experience: Run for USD 259 At-Large seat in 2007. Worked on James Barfield's campaign when he ran for City Councilman, worked as the parade coordinator for Senator Donald Betts campaign to unseat Rep. Todd Tiahrt. Ran unsuccessfully for President of the NAACP and Local Machinists Union 834.
Why are you running for office?: I am running because I believe there needs to be a curriculum reform and diversity in education in recruitment, hiring and retention of teachers, a creative curriculum which would include African and African American History and other nationalities that help build and form our nation. I want to work actively with fellow USD 259 Board Members to eliminate zero tolerance policies and shape discipline policies that use suspension and expulsion as a last resort for the most serious offenders (drugs and guns). I want Equitable opportunities for all. Public and community engagement in education reforms. More Parental involvement in their children's educations.
What's your top priority if you are elected?: I would like to eliminate the Zero Tolerance and Discipline Disparities. The Board should promote alternative policies that do not remove students from the learning environment or rely on law enforcement for discipline that could be handled at school.
Tell us one idea you have to improve the economy/budget problem?: The economy can improve when there are more jobs created. Where people can make a living wage and feel comfortable enough to spend their dollars.
In order to fix the budget problem for schools there needs to be a line item audit done to see where there maybe waste and abuse. And, maybe there should be a review of cutting Administration salaries and/or eliminating some positions at the top.
