On the night when Kobe Bryant eclipsed the 30,000-point milestone, the Lakers broke open a close game with a strong second half.
Playing on the second night of back-to-back road games, the Lakers took control with a 30-16 third-quarter effort while holding off every fourth-quarter run from the Hornets.
Ryan Anderson was the game's leading scorer with 31 points but it wasn't nearly enough.
Bryant finished with 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, but it was Dwight Howard's defense that changed the game. Howard blocked five shots, frustrating the Hornets, especially in the pivotal third quarter.
Bryant cleared 30,000 points late in the second quarter when he drove from the right wing and hit a floating jumper over Hornets center Robin Lopez.
Jordan Hill was productive off the bench with nine points and eight boards. Antawn Jamison (15 points), starting for injured Pau Gasol, and Metta World Peace (11) also scored in double figures.
