1. Phil Vettel gives the Pump Room two stars

The foursome across from me could barely notice the food on their table, so intent were they on the party in the far corner. They craned their necks; they giggled; they tweeted furiously. Eventually, the female half of the group mustered the courage to approach. They were respectful. The famous person who had caught their eye graciously shook hands. The women departed, triumph in their eyes.

  3. Phil Vettel recommends restaurants with spicy dishes

When it's cold outside, you want to be warm inside, and one way to accomplish that is with a nice jolt of spice in your food. Here are a few dishes, some of them in surprising places, that have gotten our tonsils' attention lately.

  5. Summer eating list

I don't know if teachers still do this, but at the end of each school year, I was handed a summer reading list, a sheet of required and optional books that would prepare students for the coming school year. (I still owe a measure of revenge to the teacher who saddled me with "Lord Jim.")

  7. 'Avatar' star Sam Worthington coming to Chicago, 'Shameless' ratings up, Wu-Tang members dine at Joe's

“Avatar” and “Clash of the Titans” star Sam Worthington will visit Chicago on Wednesday to promote his upcoming heist thriller “Man on a Ledge.” The 35-year-old actor will meet with media to discuss “Man on a Ledge,” but will not make any public appearances, as far as I know.

  9. 'Chicago Fire' trailer includes Rahm Emanuel cameo, Kerry Wood releasing children's book, John Mayer spotted at Jake Melnick's

The three minute trailer for the upcoming NBC drama “Chicago Fire” features firefighters battling flames in a collapsing building, a firefighter receiving a “Pulp Fiction”-like needle through the chest, and two people sucking face in the shower, but it’s the unexpected cameo by Mayor Rahm Emanuel that most caught my attention.

  13. Ian Schrager transforms a legend, Chicago journalists are honored

The oversized invitation for the opening of Ian Schrager's newest hotel, Public Chicago, stated "no jacket required and dress knockout." And even though the party was intended to be a celebration of the hotel, formerly the Ambassador East, it also celebrated the transformation of the world famous Pump Room. The invite-only crowd, greeted by a smiling Ian Schrager, mingled in the living room (lobby) and the library sampling canapes and cocktails while photographers snapped away at the scenesters and screen stars Billy Zane ("Titanic") and Zoe Saldana ("Avatar" and "Star Trek").

The Pump Room is back, baby. The ghosts of former habitues Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart and untold others can revel in a revamped dining room that's as relevant for today's restaurant patron as the original Pump Room was for the celebrities of yesteryear.
