11. How to pair wine

"Woo-hoo," Homer Simpson well might say, "Bacon Day!" But while Homie would pop open a cold one to accompany this recipe, we're after a wine pairing. For a red, keeping it on the lighter side is smart (bit of fat, bit of tannin), so pinot noir or gamay...

  13. Culinary Giant: Ada Boni

Ada Boni's cookbook "Il Talismano della Felicita" is considered to be the Italian "Joy of Cooking." It's easy to see why: Published in 1928, the book (which translates as "the talisman of happiness" in English) quickly became a must-have for generations of Italian women and went through multiple editions and revisions. It arrived in the United States in 1950 as "The Talisman Italian Cookbook" and was among the few authentic Italian cookbooks in English at the time. The book influenced and inspired home cooks and food professionals alike.

  17. A bit of Britain at Jolly Posh

Before I could ride a bicycle or recite The Lord's Prayer, I remember sausages. Bulbous and gray, with brown patches from the fry pan, these links — ask my folks — were the quickest, cheapest way to quiet a hyper child. But my introduction to sausages was likely different from yours.

  19. Let artichoke possibilities flower

I was giving one of my periodic talks at local libraries the other day, and someone asked if I knew a good way to prepare artichokes. It stopped me cold. “A” good way? Only one? Which one? Do you want artichokes by themselves? Do you want artichokes as an ingredient? Do you want them cooked or do you want them raw? Too many choices.
