3. Experience sugar that has some pop to it

Like any faithful viewer of "Top Chef," I am familiar with molecular gastronomy, the futuristic style of cooking that utilizes tools and ingredients from a chemistry lab to transform olive oil into crispy chips or spinach into foam. This kind of food is exciting to eat at a trendy restaurant. But in my own kitchen, I prefer the familiarity of a plain old egg and cheese sandwich to the shock of a sous vide egg with croissant foam. So I was skeptical when confronted with a sleek home cook’s kit from a Canadian outfit called Molecule-R.

15. National Grilled Cheese Day: It was his favorite Saturday sandwich, and they killed it

There was a period in my life when I had lunch every Saturday at Kokomo, a lunch counter in that odd part of Farmers Market between DuPar's and the place where they grind the horseradish.

19. Critic's Choice: Chicken dinners that entice you to leave the roost

Funny how the chicken has become our most beloved bird. My neighbor is raising some exotic chicks, but even those of us who don't go to that extreme have our own favorite named chickens to buy — Rosie, Rocky, Mary or the more exotically named Jidori. Roast chicken is the go-to dish for every chef I can name. And chicken is a perennial favorite on most restaurant menus — fried, pan-fried, rotisserie-roasted, in tagine, salad, soup, pot pie, curry and every which way. Here are three of my favorite chicken dishes in L.A.

“But they’re weeds.”
“But they’re weeds.” My much better half is not, shall we say, “adventurous” when it comes to greens: A “real” salad is built around a wedge of iceberg or chopped romaine. Stewed collards are fine for New Year&...
