  1. Destination: Cocktail: Hot banana buttered rum

Former Le Cirque and Citrus chef Rémi Lauvand has landed in downtown L.A. at a sleek new restaurant called Le Ka. For his head mixologist, the acclaimed French chef (who is cooking food from all over the world at Le Ka) has chosen South Carolina native Andrew Parish. Parish is all about expanding the relationship between food and drink, often incorporating the former into the latter. Take for example his hot banana buttered rum, which employs rich butter and mashed bananas in the service of creating a mouth-watering hot cocktail that feels very much like a meal. With cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and cloves, this rich drink is the perfect thing to sip at the end of a long night.

  9. Easy Blueberry Turnovers That Disappear Fast

Last week, we used a refrigerated pie crust to cut the preparation time for a quiche. That left a second crust in the package. Rather than let that dough languish in the refrigerator or freezer, we came up with a quick dessert.

  13. Maple syrup in Somerset County

What's in a name? Well, quite a lot if your paycheck has someone else's name on it. And, whether you eat scrapple, pon haus or mush may depend on where you grew up. In this ever more communicative world, have you eaten farro, quinoa or edamame? Some of...

  15. My life of pie

Pies always made me nervous. Didn't matter if they were deep-dish or mile-high. And you could call them whatever: quiche, tart or galette. It's the crust and the making of it that always stopped me cold. I would avoid recipes calling for pie dough, or I'd scurry shamed-faced to the frozen food aisle of the local supermarket to buy ready-made.

  21. The family recipe

Cookies have gone soft, complains Uncle Howie. They've got no gumption, no backbone. They're weak, pudgy, tender in the tummy. "That's not a cookie!" he shouts. "That's a cake."
