1. Roast chicken to warm the soul

The No. 1 trick to roasting chicken: Heat. For perfectly golden skin, turn on the convection setting on the oven, if you have one, or fully heat the oven to 400 degrees. For moistness, let the chicken swim first in a briny solution of water, sugar and salt for a few hours before roasting.

  7. Culinary SOS: Bluewater Grill's chicken chopped salad with avocado dressing

Dear SOS: A visiting cousin from Georgia and I recently ate lunch at the Bluewater Grill in Redondo Beach, and she loved the avocado vinaigrette salad dressing — so much so that we returned for dinner the following day just so she could order it again. Any possibility that the Bluewater Grill would share its recipe for this salad dressing? It would make one Georgia Peach very happy.

  11. Review: Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar

If I'd been weaned on Cuban black beans, I'm sure I'd hate the spicy version I had at Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar. If I had a Jamaican grandmother who regularly prepared curry, I'm sure the very good curried shrimp at Paladar wouldn't hold a...

  13. Stout Bar and Grill

The newest neighborhood Irish pub in Oakland Park offers its weekday customers $1 off drinks from 4 to 7 p.m., including domestic beers, well liquors and house wines. During that time, select bar bites cost $5. Choose from tuna bombs — tuna tartare wrapped in cucumber with wasabi sauce — shrimp wontons or Scotch eggs at the bar. Recently, the place implemented a $6 martini menu featuring classics such as the gin martini and the cosmo, but the skinny margarita martini and some rum martinis are also sold at that price. If the discounts don't lure you to Stout, the bar's free shuttle service will. Any day of the week, hop on the Stout van at McSorley's on Fort Lauderdale Beach and avoid being the designated driver. At the end of the night, the shuttle drops riders off at their homes.
