1. On the borderline

First impression: Given the Mexican's live entertainment and the loud volume when the dining room is busy, the venue's owners clearly wanted to create a bar that functions as a restaurant. The menu includes traditional and novel takes on Mexican. Some...

  3. In Gladstone Park, Mom's knows best

Cuernavaca, in the state of Morelos, an hour's drive south of Mexico City, can claim in its culinary heritage a curious dish unfamiliar to many Chicagoans: tacos acorazados. This style of taco is a beloved regional idiosyncrasy, but also something Paula Deen might have scrawled in her dream journal.

  5. Restaurant review: Mesa marries Latin flavors with contemporary trends

With four variations on a theme of guacamole, Mesa is a mandatory stop for anyone who appreciates the attributes of the glorious avocado. The innovative, fresh fare here makes the rest of the menu visit-worthy as well.

  7. Spicing up dinner can be quick, easy

I have some super-easy, go-to meals — avocado smashed on toast with a drizzle of pistachio or hazelnut oil; scrambled eggs and chevre in a tortilla, splashed with Valentina sauce; a heap of baby spinach or arugula topped with a poached egg and...

  9. Easter eggs good for salads

PARIS — Easter still makes me think of vinegar. A clear wax crayon, drawn onto the white shell, not able to see the childish designs, hoping for the best. Dipping into the colored, vinegary dye with a flimsy wisp of wire shaped like a stop sign. Who decided a hexagon was best suited for Easter egg fishing?

  11. Jonathan Gold's Taco Tuesday: Ara's Tacos

Scholars of the taqueria arts are well-acquainted with the taco arabe, the signature taco of the Puebla region, which is basically the Mexican version of shwarma: grilled meat shaved from the outside of a skewered cone of sliced, stacked, marinated meat, then folded into a flatbread vaguely resembling pita. The taco arabe, brought to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants in the early years of the last century, still served in every restaurant with even modest Poblano inclinations, is the ancestors of today’s ubiquitous taco al pastor.

Longevity signals success when it comes to restaurants, so the River Grille’s 10th anniversary this year establishes a good base for the Easton restaurant. My recent dinner there, however, took the score to the max.

  19. Review: Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar

If I'd been weaned on Cuban black beans, I'm sure I'd hate the spicy version I had at Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar. If I had a Jamaican grandmother who regularly prepared curry, I'm sure the very good curried shrimp at Paladar wouldn't hold a...
