It's not unheard of for a college football team to resort to a silent count for a quarterback during games especially when playing in a hostile environment, but during a home game? That's what happened to Northwestern in its 29-28 loss to Nebraska. According to the Chicago Tribune, Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter had to revert to using a silent count for the final drive of the game because of the noisy Nebraska fans at Ryan Field Stadium. The Tribune noted than half of the fans in attendance were cheering on the Huskers.
Welcome to the party
Twelve more teams joined the ranks of bowl eligible teams this week, bringing the total up to 28 teams who have qualified for the 35 postseason bowl games. Six teams were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention – FIU, Idaho, Akron, UMass, UNLV and Southern Miss.
On the hot seat
It's gotten bad to worse for Auburn's Gene Chizik. The Tigers coach can only watch as his team is mired in its worst start in more than six decades. Auburn lost to Vanderbilt Saturday 17-13 and is now 9-11 since winning the national championship in 2010. Worse off, Auburn is 0-5 in the SEC so far this season and according to CBSSports.com, with game against Texas A&M, Georgia and Alabama, the Tigers could go winless in conference play for the first time since 1952.
Tough luck
New Mexico's Kasey Carrier had a career night for the Lobos against Air Force Saturday. The junior running back rushed for a Mountain West record 338 yards on 38 carries with three touchdowns. However, it wasn't enough as Air Force held on to beat New Mexico 28-23.
900 and counting
Michigan's 12-10 victory over Michigan State Saturday meant a lot of things to the Wolverines. First of all, it was the team's fifth win of the season. It snapped a four-game losing streak to the in-state rival Spartans, but most of all it was the program's 900th victory, the most in college football. Texas is in second place with 863 wins, followed by Notre Dame (860), Nebraska (851) and Ohio State (833).
