Update: Young was 4 of 10 from the line in Friday's 79-47 win against Northwestern State.
Unless something changes, the Gators better hope their postseason does not come to rest on Young's broad shoulders, beginning in Friday night's opening game against Northwestern State.
Young was 6 of 17 from the line during the SEC Tournament, including 1 of 4 in Sunday's 66-63 loss to Ole Miss in the title game. The loss dropped Florida to 0-6 in games decided by single digits this season.
A 49.6-percent shooter from the line (59 of 119), Young is hitting just 42.1 percent from the line in Florida's seven losses.
Young had little to say Thursday about his struggles.
"I'm not going to sulk or stress about it," he said. "Worrying about the last free throw isn't going to help me make the next one. I'll do the best I can."
Stressed or not, there seems to be a mental component at play here.
Young shot 70.3 percent (26 of 37) as a freshman and 59.3 percent (54 of 91) a season ago.
Asked this week if he might consider benching Young late in close games, coach Billy Donovan said many factors would go into his decision.
"A lot of it depends on matchups," Donovan said. "Will (Yeguete) is not a great free throw shooter either. Do you now put (former Erik) Murphy at the center spot and play with four uards? You have to look at who the other team has out there. You can decide, OK, we're going to go a little bit smaller and what ends up happening is it's hard sometimes to shift offense/defense.
"If you're playing defense and a shot goes up, we rebound it and you've got frontcourt guys in the game that are not great free-throw shooters, the only way to get 'em off the floor is to call timeout. You have to play the possession through. If you don't put 'em out there, shot goes up, the miss it, good chance you give up some second-chance points. ... It's really who you're playing against? Matchups? Lineups? Do we think some of these guys who
are a little better can do a better job of rebounding?"
Benching Young late in games clearly not a simple decision. The best solution would be for Young to start making a few more free throws during the postseason.
