Marie E. Ance, 91, of Charlevoix, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at her home.
She was born at home, Feb. 21, 1921, in Banks Township, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie (Wynsma) Essenburg. Marie graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1939 as valedictorian of her class.
Marie worked in the business office of the Ellsworth Canning Factory during World War II.
On Nov. 27, 1948, Marie married Lysle D. Ance, DDS in Ellsworth. They made their home in Charlevoix where they raised their two daughters, Alice and Laurel.
Marie worked for 17 years as a receptionist and lab assistant for Dr. Robert Anderson, OD, where many area residents remember her fondly.
Marie was an accomplished knitter and seamstress, but may mostly be remembered for her homemade apple pies. She enjoyed playing golf and in her later years became an avid Detroit Tigers fan.
She is survived by her daughters, Alice Ance-Matthews of Troy, Mich., and Laurel D. Ance of Beverly Hills, Mich., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Lysle, preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1996.
Marie was also preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Andrew Essenburg; brothers, Don Essenburg, Bruce Essenburg and Andrew "Andy" Essenburg Jr.; sisters, Jean Essenburg Rood and Ruth Essenburg Barkey; and infant twins, Betty and Arlo, and baby Laverne "Buddy."
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the First Congregational Church in Charlevoix, where visitation will begin at 1 p.m. The Rev. Neil Wilson will officiate and burial will take place in the Atwood Cemetery.
