1. Real Art Ways in Hartford Celebrates the 1-Year Anniversary of Occupy Wall Street

If you haven't been living under a rock for the past year, then you've probably heard something about Occupy Wall Street. On September 17 at 7:30 p.m., Real Art Ways will celebrate the first anniversary of OWS with a reading of activist interviews that have been crafted into individual monologues. Entitled Occupy #S17, these performances are meant to shed light on the various people who were involved in the global phenomenon, accentuating each participant's distinctive voice while simultaneously realizing that these diverse voices also spoke out to pursue a common goal. The performance will also include theater artists from various institutions including the HartBeat Ensemble, ARTFARM, the Hartford Stage Company, Bated Breath Theater Company, Theater 4 and Jacques Lamarre, a Connecticut playwright.

  7. Presidential campaign on cruise control

In the wake of the furor over the Supreme Court's salvation of President Barack Obama's health care act, the presidential campaign seems now to have settled down to the old partisan argument: The Republicans like to call it class warfare, while the Democratsprefer to use terms like income inequity.

  17. Wisconsin recall: Labor's love lost

Any way you slice it, the refusal of Wisconsin voters to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker for limiting the collective-bargaining rights of unionized public-sector employees was a blow not only to organized labor but to the Democratic Party as a whole. On an issue that goes to the core of the American labor movement's ability to deliver for the party as its key constituency, big corporate and individual fat-cat money overwhelmed the traditional union muscle of political boots on the ground. Mr. Walker, with a 7-to-1 advantage in advertising spending, snowed under labor's door-to-door campaigning.
