  1. Obama, Romney Down to the Wire in Final Bid for Votes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The long, costly and contentious presidential campaign wound down Tuesday to a series of final stops in a handful of fiercely competitive states, as President Obama and challenger Mitt Romney sought to fortify their positions in the country's few remaining battlegrounds.

WASHINGTON -- Karl Rove, the Republican political savant George W. Bush dubbed "Turd Blossom," has an election-week tradition worthy of his nickname: He dumps a load of manure on the American public and watches to see if it will flower.

  7. Hillary in 2012? It could happen

A number of news reports have suggested the possibility of the presidential election ending in a draw — both candidates garnering 269 electors. You need 270 to win. A long shot? Maybe. It happened in 1800, when Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr each...

  9. Fundraiser in chief

As President Barack Obama recently headlined the last of a record-breaking number of fundraisers for his reelection bid, it is important to understand that the extraordinary rise in presidential fundraising efforts in recent decades is an unintended consequence of our campaign finance system and that these dynamics are changing the ways that presidents allocate their most precious resource for both campaigning and governing: their time.

  11. Small Wonders: Just getting what we deserve

It all comes down to Tuesday. The year-long tour de force of stump speeches, primaries, promises, debates and conventions. All the mudslinging, invectives, media circuses, accusations, half-truths, almost-facts and outright lies. All the straight...

  13. How a bitter campaign will end

Last month, a New York Times story noted "an extraordinary event" in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. President Mikhail Saakashvili, whose human rights record is not exactly the gold standard, "conceded defeat in parliamentary elections," saying gamely that "democracy works in this way."

  15. The mighty fine state of our political system

My fellow taxpaying chumbolones. With only days before Tuesday's election — between a big-government Republican and a big-big-big-really-big-government Democrat — why don't we wrap things up? The dog that didn't bark Can President Barack...

For years in the last decade, it was a common line in Huntington Beach City Council stories: "The council voted 6 to 1, with Jill Hardy dissenting." Hardy, who served on the council from 2002 to 2010 and is running again this year, often did not speak...

  21. From the Right: Don't say he didn't warn you

I write this column as a public service announcement. Brace yourselves America! If the trends continue, Nov. 7 will be a very critical day in this nation’s history; especially in the big cities of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and most of all in Detroit. Yes, I am aware that Election Day is not the seventh but it is the results that we are trending toward that may cause the huge melee. It’s looking like Mitt Romney will be elected president. The casus belli will be the fact that Romney may be elected by winning the Electoral College votes without also winning the popular vote. Maybe good news for the country as a whole, but those big cities may burn as the two “Left Coasts” and their cross-country allies scream accusations of another stolen election.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A strengthening Hurricane Sandy disrupted the race for the White House Monday, with President Obama cancelling two of his precious waning campaign days to get Air Force One safely back to Washington and monitor the storm. Obama...
