Bill Nelson is the Democratic U.S. Senator from Florida, elected to his second term in 2006. He previously served 12 years in the U.S. House (1979-1991), during which he flew aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1986 -- the flight before the Challenger accident. Nelson, a moderate Democrat and ardent NASA supporter, lost his 1990 bid for Florida governor but rebounded in 1994 to become the state insurance commissioner.
