  1. Women in combat: Good to go if they meet standards

Women in the military must have the same opportunities as men to take on grueling and dangerous combat jobs, whether loading 50-pound artillery shells or joining commando raids to take out terrorists, defense leaders declared Thursday as they ordered a quarter-million positions open to service members regardless of gender.

  6. Chan Lowe: The Oklahoma tornadoes

Having spent nine years in Oklahoma, I found much about that state’s people to respect and admire—particularly their faith and their resiliency, which are intertwined in ways not understood by those who have never lived in the Bible Belt. They always seem to be given more than their share of acts of God and man to endure. It was so with their forbears, as it is now. This does not make their pain any easier, but it makes it survivable. My prayers are with them.

  10. The giant, shocking IRS scandal that wasn't

There's nothing Washington likes better than a scandal. So official Washington was absolutely orgasmic this week while dealing with not one, but three scandals at the same time. Not one of which, sadly, was a sex scandal. First, there were accusations...

  14. Congress speaks with a loud, muddled voice on Syria

  16. Today's Buzz: Is Benghazi Obama's Watergate?

On Monday President Obama called the ongoing controversy over the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya a “sideshow.” The president accused critics of exploiting the tragedy for political reasons, and argued that his administration has been working to fix the problems that made the mission vulnerable. But the critics, including top Republicans in Congress, pointed to emails that showed the White House took part in discussions between the State Department and CIA over how the talking points describing the attack would be written, and changes were made that obscured the true nature of the attack. One GOP lawmaker, Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, invoked the possibility of impeachment proceedings. Are Republicans blowing this scandal out or proportion? Or is President Obama still not coming clean with the American people? Talk about it!

JERUSALEM -- Not long ago, Chuck Hagel’s past comments about Israel nearly torpedoed his nomination as Defense secretary. In his first visit here since winning confirmation, he’s sticking to one word in particular: “Friend."

  22. More skepticism of BRAC, this time in the Senate

Sen. Tim Kaine expressed skepticism this week that another military base-closing round is a good idea -- and he had some company. Kaine questioned Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey about the effectiveness of the...
