  8. Here's why putting the AG next in line for the governor's office could be a problem

    Change of Subject
Under the amendment...the attorney general would be next in line if the governor died, quit or was removed from office. That makes a lot of sense. Candidates for attorney general are subject to far more voter scrutiny than those for......

  10. Let's review: Rachel Shteir and poor Chicago

And they said the gentle art of literary criticism was dead, confined to irrelevance. Not this week, gentle reader. Not in Chicago. Not in the heat of L'affaire de Shteir. What book review in the history of Chicago literature — heck, what recent book review, period — has enjoyed the attention afforded to Rachel Shteir's review in the last Sunday's New York Times?

When a critic takes on a city's refusal to acknowledge its own blemishes, it becomes a bit tricky for residents to respond without proving the critic's point.

  20. The Illinois jobs crisis

Laugh all you want about Texas Gov. Rick Perry's campaign to recruit businesses from Illinois to the Lone Star State. We don't know whether Perry will succeed in prompting a commercial exodus from the Land of Lincoln to the land of droughts, fire ants and deadly fertilizer-plant explosions. Yet Perry's stunt is another serious wake-up call for Illinois politicians and the inhospitable business climate they've created.
