  10. Replacing John Leopold

Former Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold stands alone among Maryland's recent crop of disgraced politicians in that he actually appears to feel disgraced by the recent airing of his misdeeds at trial. In one case after another — Sheila Dixon, Janet Johnson, Daryl Jones, Tiffany Alston, Ulysses Currie — elected officials have displayed precious little shame and regret for their illegal or unethical behavior. Upon his conviction for offenses related to the misuse of his executive protection detail and his scheduler for political and/or scatological purposes, Mr. Leopold not only resigned but acknowledged "serious errors in judgment." In the end, he added a coda of responsibility to an otherwise sordid chapter in Anne Arundel County history.

  12. Alston must go

Another Maryland politician has broken the law and is, nonetheless, trying to hold on to elected office. Del. Tiffany Alston this week agreed to a plea deal that allowed her to avoid trial on charges that she misused money from her campaign funds to pay for her wedding and resulted in a one-year suspended sentence for an earlier conviction on charges of misconduct in office related to her theft of $800 from the General Assembly to pay expenses in her private law office. In spite of that, the Prince George's County Democrat initially argued that she could continue in office, and after the General Assembly's lawyer said otherwise, she has continued to insist that she could return to the legislature after the year's sentence is up.

  14. Maryland politicians' crime spree

For the past three years, Maryland has experienced an unprecedented crime wave of political corruption. The only comparable period in memory would be the 1970s, when a governor was jailed and a sitting U.S. vice president (who had served as governor and Baltimore County executive) resigned in shame. The current offenders have been high-ranking elected officials, and the offenses have been far more serious than simple lapses in judgment. They have involved a level of hubris and ethical depravity that are shocking by any standard.
