A Northwest Side native, George conquered childhood polio to embark on a spiritual career that took him across the globe as a missionary. His journey brought him back home when he was appointed spiritual leader of the Chicago archdiocese and its 2.4 million Catholics. At his installation in Chicago in May 1997, George introduced himself humbly to his new flock by saying: "I am Francis, your neighbor."
