  17. HCC sociology classes cook and serve Easter dinner at local soup kitchen

About 30 students from Hagerstown Community College put aside their pencils and textbooks Friday for a lesson involving ham, mashed potatoes, green beans and good will. The students, members of five HCC sociology classes, cooked and served an Easter dinner at The Salvation Army’s soup kitchen in Hagerstown, then orchestrated a children¿s Easter egg hunt.“The Salvation Army normally doesn¿t serve on Good Friday, so I asked them, because I feel like people still need to eat, if we could just take over, and so that¿s what we¿ve done,” said sociology professor Daniel Madron. His students also fill in at the soup kitchen at Thanksgiving.Madron said the experience tied in to discussions the group had in class about stereotypes and misconceptions about people who receive aid.¿It¿s real life,¿ he said. ¿It¿s stuff we talk about in class, and then applying it in real life.¿The students brought in donated food in preparation for the event, Madron said. They started cooking at 7 a.m. and began serving at about 10:30 a.m. Within the first half-hour, they had served more than 100 people.¿I decided to do it because it¿s a great way of giving back to the community,¿ HCC student Linnea McCarl, 18, said between handing out plates of dessert.Normally, the soup kitchen uses a cafeteria-style serving line, but on Friday, the students took the food to guests at their tables and took away their plates when they finished.¿It was nice to be able to talk to them, and you get a chance to have a conversation with them instead of, ‘Here you go, have a nice day,¿¿ said Lashonta Baldwin, 36, one of the HCC students.¿It¿s always great to help people, and also just the thanks that they give, and the happiness that they get from having that one meal a day that they don¿t have to worry about,¿ Baldwin said.Zane Metzer Jr., 52, of Hagerstown, deemed the food very good and said he appreciated the special holiday service.¿I don¿t have much family anymore, and I don¿t get to go with them, so I¿m kind of on my own,¿ he said.In addition to volunteering at the Salvation Army meal, the students also gave a donation to the Community Action Council for the families it houses, Madron said.
