  1. Review: 'Strange Rebels' by Christian Caryl

  3. 'The Walking' continues the journey of Iranian immigrants

In "The Walking," a simple and pure young man circles half the world, on foot, by ship and plane, to a place he's longed to see. As a boy growing up in Iranian Kurdistan, Saladin lost himself in the dreamy vision of California he's seen in the movies....

  9. Middle East mess was born in the U.S.A.

Titillation over David Petraeus and political posturing over Susan Rice aside, here is the most important unasked question: Why did we foster regime change in Libya and Egypt that gave the Muslim Brotherhood control in the latter and produced a gaggle...

  11. Lloyd Waters: Guests of the Ayatollah, minus six

How is your memory working this morning? A little rusty, you say. I want to take you back 33 years to 1979 and ask you to remember a few things. If you’re not old enough to recall back that far, some review of that era just might be worthwhile....

  15. Ehrlich is wrong on U.S. policy in the Middle East

Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s recent column ("The Obama doctrine: Passivity where leadership is needed," Oct. 14) continues to present a flawed ideological position on the Middle East when a heterodox view is in order. We entered the Middle East and North...

  17. Ben Affleck's mission accomplished in 'Argo' ★★★ 1/2

The propulsive hostage thriller "Argo," the third feature directed by Ben Affleck, just plain works. It's heartening to encounter a film, based on fact but happy to include all sorts of exciting fictions to amp up the suspense, whose entertainment intentions are clear. The execution is clean, sharp and rock-solid. It's as apolitical as a political crisis story set in Iran can get. But "the first rule in any deception operation is to understand who your audience is."

  21. Salman Rushdie, freedom writer

In the 1990s, he was the world-famous novelist few people officially laid eyes on. Of Salman Rushdie's dozen-plus novels, it was "The Satanic Verses" (1988) that raised a hue and cry and sent him undercover: Its supposedly sacrilegious portrayal of the prophet Muhammad brought Rushdie a fatwa, a death sentence, from Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (it was lifted in 1998). The writer came to L.A. to accept the Library Foundation of Los Angeles' literary award and to talk about his new memoir of his underground years, "Joseph Anton." He and the book have arrived just as the blowback from "Innocence of Muslims" has caused us all to confront the questions that commandeered a decade of his life.
