  5. Object Sculptures Of Michael Mahalchick At NBMAA

Michael Mahalchick wants people to look at the material objects they see all around them and re-examine what those items mean. Trash is turned into art.

  7. Biblioracle: Short and sweet, but no trend

Apparently, we're in them midst of a short story boomlet. I know this because The New York Times told me so in a recent article, "Good Fit for Today's Little Screens: Short Stories." I tend to put little trust in trend pieces. If I believed every...

  9. Oh, for a simpler Super Bowl, with gerbils shot from cannons

Do you ever wish for the simple Super Bowl days, the Super Bowls involving gerbils?
Do you ever wish for the simple Super Bowl days, the Super Bowls involving gerbils? I'm talking only a few years ago, when the game had nothing to do with deer antler spray and the TV spots didn't involve white Jamaican racial politics and German...

  23. From the desk of: Some of grandkids' toys just can't be given away

Since my grandchildren are all in their teens, it seemed like a good idea to go through the toys I kept on hand for their visits. I couldn’t get rid of any of their beloved LEGOS. LEGOS and rubber dart guns used to occupy much of their time. A Noah’s Ark with many pairs of animals was another favorite. The late John Hinshaw gave them away at his Texaco Service Station in Holtville when my children were young. My children were thrilled to add to their collection of animals each week when we gassed up the car.
