  21. Museum of Contemporary Art store

For book and art lovers, it's possible to spend as much time in the Museum of Contemporary Art store as the MCA itself. Located in the southwest corner of the MCA, the book section occupies the second floor of the store and it's full of things you won't find in chain bookstores, said assistant buyer John Gustafson. Artist monographs are the staples, including recent and upcoming MCA artists such as Belgian painter Luc Tuymans, whose exhibit opens in October. Additional categories are architecture and design (which includes a $200 tome on Frank Lloyd Wright), MCA publications, photography, film and video, performing arts, art theory and criticism. But such labels play down the fun of the store. There are subway art and graffiti books, art magazines and vampire mashups, moleskin journals and the antithesis of Hallmark greeting cards. Three flat-screen televisions play whatever is selected from the DVDs on sale, such as Gustafson's pick: a DVD of Warner Bros.' Saturday morning cartoons from the 1980s. Including the children's section downstairs, the store offers artifacts, treasures and curios of contemporary culture.
