  3. Homeowners may pick up property-tax slack if amendment passes in November

  5. Should Congress fiddle with the home mortgage deduction?

As Congress looks for new sources of revenue to deal with the “fiscal cliff,” reducing or eliminating the venerable and popular home mortgage deduction is on the table. The tax benefit allows taxpayers to cut their taxable income by the amount of interest they pay on their home loans. Eliminating it would raise $108 billion this year and $1.26 trillion over 10 years. Reducing the mortgage cap from the current $1.1 million to $500,000 would raise $41 billion over 10 years; having high earners deduct only 28 percent of their interest would raise $40 billion over 10 years. The real estate industry argues the deduction is essential to keeping the housing market healthy. Others disagree and say the deduction primarily helps high-income households, who can afford to pay a little more in taxes. What's your view?
