1. What really happened in Jerusalem

"I honestly believe that if any Israeli parent sat down with those (Palestinian) kids, they'd say I want these kids to succeed."
"I honestly believe that if any Israeli parent sat down with those (Palestinian) kids, they'd say I want these kids to succeed." -- Barack Obama, in Jerusalem, March 21 WASHINGTON - Very true. But how does the other side feel about Israeli kids?...

5. Supremes waffle on marriage equality

Over the last 40 years, I've been involved in a lot of political battles for a lot of different causes: workers' rights, women's rights, gay rights, environmental protection, anti-war, anti-nuclear power, anti-urban sprawl, animal rights, gun control, clean air, open space, small farms, global warming. But I've never seen the public turn around and embrace any issue faster than marriage equality.

7. End-of-life views are lopsided in support of the right to choose 'death with dignity'

There does not seem to be any middle ground on the issue of physician-assisted suicide. In fact, going by the reactions to Friday's column on that topic, there is no support for any ground other than that for the right of individuals to make end-of-life decisions for themselves.

9. Murder-suicide prevails over power structure denial of dignity

Savor the victory. The power structure conspired to perpetuate hell for Mildred and Elwood "Woody" Osman of Cherryville, but they prevailed.

11. X-Ray art bewilders and beguiles

Thomas B. Kinraide was an electrical engineer first and only secondly an artist.
Thomas B. Kinraide was an electrical engineer first and only secondly an artist. But there's no doubt that the pioneering photographs the Massachusetts inventor made in the 1890s of the high-frequency electrical currents used to generate X-rays have...

13. Curbs On Guns Work Better Than Old Slogans

The Hartford Courant
The rhetorical failure of the week belonged to state Rep. Craig Miner who, in handing down the lame list of Republican proposals from a working group on gun violence, said, "We believe it's not the gun that kills the person. It's the person that...

15. Solitary confinement's toll

WASHINGTON -- "Zero Dark Thirty," a nominee for Sunday's Oscar as Best Picture, reignited debate about whether the waterboarding of terrorism suspects was torture. This practice, which ended in 2003, was used on only three suspects. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of American prison inmates are kept in protracted solitary confinement that arguably constitutes torture and probably violates the Eighth Amendment prohibition of "cruel and unusual punishments."

17. Rejecting 31,000 gun deaths as a fact of life

There are so many violent tragedies every day — I'm thinking specifically about the deaths of young people, and particularly those by gun — it's impossible to process it all, much less give our hearts to it. If we tried, our heads would burst.

19. Shinn's 'Teddy Ferrara' stuck on campus

THEATER REVIEW: "Teddy Ferrara" at the Goodman Theatre ★★
One of the problems with plays dominated by collegiate sexuality — and there is no shortage of graphic undergraduate sex in Christopher Shinn's “Teddy Ferrara” — is that if you are a few years removed from that particular time of...
