  1. Buzzer Beater! Butler defeats Old Dominion on rebound basket

    The talk heading into Butler's NCAA Tournament 2nd round game centered around the challenge of keeping Old Dominion off the boards.  The top offensive rebounding team in the country, Old Dominion showed incredible skill attacking the glass throughout their contest with Butler.  Their ability to get Butler's big men in foul trouble, and to convert at the free throw line, also put the Bulldogs' season in serious jeopardy.

    MILWAUKEE, WIS. -- Senior Shawn Vanzant scored all his team-high 18 points in the final 13 minutes of the game to help lead Butler past Cleveland State, 76-68, in the semifinals of the 2011 Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship at U. S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday (March 5).  The win sends Butler to a league-record sixth straight tournament championship game.

    It all began on December 1, with the Butler Bulldogs escaping from Loyola's Gentile Center with a 65-63 victory.  Little did anyone know, that result would prove to be a sign of things to come in the Horizon League this season.  78 days removed from that contest, Butler is 11-5 in the Horizon League, sitting in 4th place.  Loyola is 6-10, parked in 8th place.  The two teams will meet again on February 26th, bringing closure to the tightest race in Horizon League history.

    INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Playing without leading scorer and rebounder Matt Howard, Butler pulled together one of its best shooting performances of the season and handed visiting Wright State at 71-63 setback in a key Horizon League game at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Thursday (Feb. 10).  The win was Butler's third straight and lifted the Bulldogs to 17-9 on the season and 9-5 in league play.

  17. Butler's Howard to miss rematch with Wright State

    SECOND SHOT:  Butler, coming off back-to-back wins, will continue its three-game homestand on Thursday, Feb. 10, when it faces Wright State for the second time this season.  The two Horizon League foes will square off at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. (ET) in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU.  The Bulldogs improved to 16-9 on the season and 8-5 in the Horizon League with a 72-65 victory over UIC on Monday (Feb. 7).  That win came two days after Butler posted a 73-61 victory at then league-leading Cleveland State to complete a season sweep of the Vikings.  Wright State (17-9, 10-4 HL) won its third straight game and moved into a tie for second place in the league standings with a 74-70 win at home over Youngstown State on Monday.  The Raiders used a 14-4 run in the final 4:13 to take a 69-64 come-from-behind victory over Butler in the first meeting between the two teams last month.  That win at Wright State's Nutter Center snapped Butler's seven-game winning streak in the series.
