9. Fahy Bridge fatality flicks high beams on bicycle safety

Q: I am a bicycle commuter. I enjoy bicycling to work both for the exercise and to save money. I was very saddened to learn of the recent death of Pat Ytsma, a cyclist who was reported to be very concerned with bicycle safety and yet was hit by a car as he rode with the traffic and in the traffic lane on his way across Bethlehem's Fahy Bridge. I think many motorists need to be aware that bicyclists have every right to be in the road. It's safer for both motorists and bicyclists when cyclists ride in a way that makes themselves both visible and predictable, which means with the flow of traffic and it can mean in the center of the lane rather than off to the side where they are potentially out of sight to people in cars. Could you help us cyclists spread the word and encourage both motor-vehicle drivers and bicyclists to be courteous to each other?
