1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

With all the talk about quarterback Joe Flacco and this up-tempo offense, I really hope Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach doesn’t get overlooked. If you get a chance to watch a tape of Monday’s game, check out the block Leach makes on Ray Rice’s 7-yard touchdown run. And while you are at it, review pretty much every one of Rice’s runs and watch what Leach does in front of him. Leach is considered by most NFL pundits as the best fullback in the NFL and he was all over the field Monday, even catching three balls for 18 yards. You could almost hear the audible groan in the crowd last year on those Flacco to Leach dump-offs. However, in the preseason and through Week One, the combination has been pretty productive. And it is always entertaining to watch the burly fullback turn the corner and lower his shoulder on a defensive back.

  3. Starting or not, Upshaw wants to make an impact

Rookie outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw didn’t start in Monday’s win against the Cincinnati Bengals, but by the end of the evening, he had made his presence felt during his 29 snaps on defense. On Wednesday, Upshaw said he enjoyed every single one of them. And why not? In his NFL debut, the second-round draft pick totaled four tackles, picked up his first career sack and hit Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton once more.

  5. Ravens defense has to solve Bengals' mystery at No. 2 receiver

As a rookie last year, A.J. Green paced the Cincinnati Bengals in receptions (65), yards (1,057) and touchdowns (seven). The offense also got sizable contributions from wide receivers Jerome Simpson (50 catches for 725 yards and four touchdowns) and Andre Caldwell (37-317-three).

  17. Burning questions for the AFC North's four teams

With three teams making the playoffs and two winning 12 games during the regular season, the AFC North was arguably the NFL’s most competitive division last season. Unfortunately for the Ravens, it figures to be hyper-competitive again in 2012 -- well, except for anything involving the ever-rebuilding Cleveland Browns.

  19. Q&A with Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy

Every week, I hope to bring you a quick Q&A with someone who covers the Ravens’ opponent that weekend. On Monday night, the Cincinnati Bengals come to Baltimore, so I’m happy to start the season off by chatting with Joe Reedy, who has covered the Bengals as The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bengals beat reporter since 2009.
