Joe Flacco

Highlights

The Baltimore Ravens drafted quarterback Joe Flacco out of the University of Delaware with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Flacco was expected to serve as the Ravens' third-string quarterback as a rookie, but a shoulder injury in training camp landed starter Kyle Boller on injured reserve and backup Troy Smith was sidelined with a severe tonsil infection, elevating Flacco to the team's No. 1 spot.

Flacco started every game for the Ravens as a rookie, leading Baltimore to an 11-5 record. During the regular season he completed 60 percent of his passes (257-for-428) for 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Flacco became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win his first two playoff starts. Flacco and the Ravens fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game, ending the season with a 13-6 record.

Flacco was born Jan. 16, 1985 in Audubon, N.J. He began his college career at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to Delaware and starting for the Blue Hens as a junior and senior.

It seems like we can run, but we can’t hide. I don’t know about you, but I was spending this week getting ready for the Super Bowl. You know, the Big Game (since we aren’t authorized to call it the other title). This one has a tinge of...

  5. Where is Shirley Povich when we have our Ravens moment?

There’s an old baseball legend about a hitter who takes a called third strike. He’s so upset with the umpire that he takes his bat and gives it a mighty heave into the stratosphere. The ump gazes up at the soaring object and says, “Son,...

  19. Ravens news, notes and opinions after Wednesday's OTAs

As I expected, there was a lot more made of who didn’t show up at this week’s organized team activities than who did. The absences of Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata and Vonta Leach in particular seemed to spur the most questions. Again, the workouts are voluntary and some players choose to stay home and work out on their own. Coach John Harbaugh pointed out that the team didn’t see Ray Lewis much – if at all – in the offseason. Ed Reed wasn’t exactly a fixture at OTAs either. And Joe Flacco mentioned that Anquan Boldin wasn’t traditionally at the facility this time of year either. The comments weren’t made to disparage any of the three players but the point was made. The Ravens knew that those players would be ready to go when needed, which is the same feeling they have with the likes of Suggs, Ngata, Leach and Marshal Yanda, who also was a no-show. The Ravens have 90 players on their roster and all but about six of them were on the field in some capacity. And another veteran, Jacoby Jones, is expected to arrive today after his third-place finish in Dancing with the Stars. That should be far more the story than the handful of players who didn’t show at a workout they technically didn’t have to be at.
