3. Goodell apologizes to fans for ref lockout

Associated Press
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized Thursday to fans for having to use replacement officials during a lockout of regular refs. The impasse led to three weeks of questionable calls — and one that cost the Green Bay Packers a win. Goodell...

Shortly before midnight Monday night, not long after Justin Tucker had booted three field goals in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, 44-13, the rookie kicker received a text message from Texas head coach Mack Brown.

9. Bengals WR A.J. Green owns big-play potential

In the NFL, there's a general rule of thumb that it takes a wide receiver three years to reach his potential. As with almost every rule, there are exceptions, and the Ravens will meet one of those exceptions Monday night when the Cincinnati Bengals visit M&T Bank Stadium.

11. After getting just 10 carries in preseason, Ray Rice eager to begin regular season

Ray Rice likened the Ravens’ home game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night to the first day of school. And like an eager student, the running back is looking forward to the regular-season opener after getting just 10 carries in the preseason.

13. Game 10: Ravens hang on to beat Bengals, 31-24

For years, middle linebacker Ray Lewis has helped bail the Ravens out of situations just like the one they faced late in Sunday's game. At times, he's done it with his pure ability. Other times, the Ravens have leaned on his will or his words.

15. Newsome: Ravens' rivals made AFC North 'that much tougher'

The Ravens came into the 2012 NFL draft looking to round out their roster and add depth and create competition at several positions. They appear to have addressed all of their immediate needs, even if they made a few interesting selections Saturday. Linebacker Courtney Upshaw may end up being a steal and Kelechi Osemele and Gino Gradkowski bring athleticism and versatility to the offensive line.

17. Ravens news, notes and opinions

This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs. The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye, has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation.

19. Chuck Pagano hired to coach the Indianapolis Colts

All season, Chuck Pagano, the Ravens' brash first-year defensive coordinator, had dismissed questions about his potentially landing a head coaching job, saying his sole focus was helping the defense be the top unit in the NFL and getting to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl.
