1. Reader Q&A: Dan Pompei's Bears mailbag

Why all the focus on getting another defensive end? I thought one of the biggest keys to Lovie Smith's defense was a stud three-technique tackle -- someone like Tommie Harris before his decline. Are the Bears satisfied with what they have in that regard? -- Kellen Maicher, Columbus, Ohio

If Brandon Marshall is cleared of charges in New York, can Roger Goodell still suspend him? Ray Gliwa I think you can stop worrying about Marshall not being available for the season opener because of a suspension. I have been told it is unlikely Marshall...

The NFL draft is in the books, and what Texans fans want to know - is Jacoby Jones soon to be an Ex-Texan? Jones' infamous muffed punt during the Texans' playoff loss to the Ravens last season is obviously the reason for the uncertainty. "Jacoby's still...

  7. Matt Vensel's 2012 NFL mock draft -- version 2.0

After a wild first week in free agency that was punctuated with Peyton Manning signing with the Denver Broncos, we have a better idea of what needs teams will address in April’s NFL draft. So now seems like a good time for our second mock draft of...

  9. Ravens news, notes and opinions

As we head into Week Four of free agency, it’s probably a good time to point out that the Ravens are currently just $1.75 million under the salary cap, which is probably right around the amount of money that they’re going to need to pay their draft picks. There are certainly ways to gain financial flexibility. Signing quarterback Joe Flacco or running back Ray Rice or even cornerback Lardarius Webb to long-term contract extensions would help immensely. Restructuring a couple of contracts, like perhaps Ed Reed’s deal, would also provide relief, though Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has said on several occasions that he prefers not to resort to those measures. There is also the option of releasing some players, but as I’ve said on numerous occasions, I just don’t see any obvious candidates. Either way, the Ravens will figure out a way. They’ll have to. They still have too many needs right now – pass rusher, veteran running back, wide receiver, two or three offensive linemen, kick returner, defensive line, linebacker and safety depth – to expect to fill all their holes in the draft.

  11. With a long list of needs, upcoming NFL draft will be crucial to Ravens

The first round of the 2012 NFL draft is three weeks away, and the Ravens have a similar list of needs as they did when free agency began four weeks ago.

  13. Ravens draft preview: defensive line

  15. It seems Emery knows what he's doing

My advice for Phil Emery days before running his first NFL draft as Bears general manager is to address the receiver issue before anything else.

Eleventh in a series exploring the April 26-28 NFL draft. Next: Middle linebackers. Many teams in need of defensive ends will find what they are looking for on draft weekend. The 2012 crop of pass rushers is pretty strong, in terms of both top-end talent...

  19. Finding a pass rusher is key for the Ravens

Terrell Suggs took down a quarterback 14 times in 2011 as the Ravens ranked near the top of the NFL in most major defensive categories. The 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year wasn't exactly flying solo as he reached a career-high in sacks, but whenever opponents shut him down , as was the case in the final month of the season, the defense was merely good.

  21. Matt Vensel's 2012 NFL mock draft -- version 5.0

Finally, after months of teams poking and prodding NFL draft prospects, scouts picking apart players they had previously pumped up, and media folks like me doing hours of homework trying to make sense of it all, the 2012 NFL draft is less than 48 hours away. I would be lying if I told you that part of me wasn’t ready for all of this just to be over and done with, but still, draft weekend is easily my favorite weekend on the NFL calendar.

  23. With a number of needs, Ravens head into one of the most important drafts in franchise history

For an organization that considers the NFL draft its lifeblood — which is how Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta characterized it earlier this month — there is always a sense of urgency at this time of year.
